Opus 40

While we were in NY, we really wanted to check out Opus 40.  We discovered this "sculpture" while we were visiting Kevin's parents during the winter and have been looking forward to visiting in in person.  We went on Sunday with Kevin's dad and brother, Ryan.  It was a little rainy that day, but it was still neat that we got to check it out.

Here's a description of Opus 40 from the brochure, because I know this will explain what it is better than I can:

"Opus 40 is a monumental environmental sculpture rising out of an abandoned bluestone quarry in Saugerties, NY.  Covering more than six acres, it is made of hundreds of thousands of tons of finely fitted bluestone, constructed stone by stone over a period of 37 years."

The crazy thing about Opus 40 is that ONE man, Harvey Fite, made this entire "sculpture" by himself, using only a pulley system to lift rocks and traditional quarryman's tools.  It's just insane to think of the time and work he put into this monument over the course of his life.  He named it "Opus 40" because it was supposed to be a 40 year project.  Sadly, he died in the 37th year before Opus 40 reached its completion.

I would definitely encourage anyone in the area to check out Opus 40!  Pictures do not do this work of art justice!
